Overview
Avanceon is hiring a Principal Controls Engineer to support a long-term, strategic food &amp; beverage customer relationship. This is a key technical role focused on multi-site process automation integration, working across batching, packaging, and CIP systems.
You’ll serve as the technical right-hand to the Operations Manager, leading project execution while also acting as a mentor and subject matter expert to the broader engineering team. Ideal candidates will bring hands-on controls experience in food processing environments and a passion for delivering solutions that are smart, scalable, and operations-friendly.

What You’ll Do
Lead the design and execution of control system solutions for one of our most valued food &amp; beverage customers
Serve as a technical authority on food process automation—including process/batching, CIP, packaging, and utilities
Architect PLC, HMI, and SCADA systems (primarily Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Aveva)
Drive innovation through practical application of Industry 4.0 and IIoT technologies
Act as the customer’s trusted engineering partner—engaging with plant and corporate stakeholders across multiple locations
Lead FATs, site commissioning, and startup activities nationwide
Mentor and support other engineers on the project team
Collaborate closely with the Operations Manager to ensure successful delivery and build long-term trust
 

What You Bring
7+ years in industrial automation, with strong experience in food &amp; beverage manufacturing environments
Deep knowledge of food processing systems (e.g., batching, mixing, sanitation, temperature control, line integration)
Hands-on proficiency in PLCs (Allen-Bradley preferred), SCADA platforms (FactoryTalk, Aveva, Ignition), and HMI development
Proficient in AutoCAD Electrical and control panel design best practices
Strong communication skills—you can bridge the gap between IT, plant floor, and corporate engineering teams
Ability and willingness to travel to customer sites (10–25%)

YOUR MISSIONS WITH US :

Essential Functions : 
- Performs the work and enforces the rules in accordance with all applicable regulations, policies, methods, and practices developed for Instrumentation Work; Responsible for safety in the work environment,
- Provides support for the preparation of submittals, designs, material purchases, and accurate record keeping.
- Demonstrates ability to perform the tasks listed in the Table 1 below,
- Attends client meetings and participates in presentations as assigned,
- Provides documentation and supports Project Manager to prepare and track claims, change orders, extra work orders, 
- Assists in risk assessment,

Elementary Tasks : 
- Pre-installation : design, building, acceptance testing, logging and records keeping, comparing installation plan to technical/client requirements, delivery to site. Notification to Project Manager of defect 
- On-site installation : assembling, installing, on-site configuring and commissioning, verification of normal readings, documenting and records keeping including Pre and Post installation photos and forms.
- Post-Installation : prepare submittals, perform necessary programming of loggers, provide information, documenting and records keeping as required to Project Manager and Monitoring Engineers for their proper implementation on the IDMS,
- On-site maintenance and operations : routine QC inspections, calibrations, maintenance and cleaning, observe system performance, diagnose failures and subsequently failure prevention, perform repairs as necessary, document site conditions and identify potential problem areas, documentation and record keeping as required,
- Decommissioning and disposal : uninstall instruments and associated components, dispose of non-reusable parts, repatriation of re-usable parts to the relevant office, cleaning and restoration of site to pre-existing conditions, cleaning and restoration of inventoried instruments for future deployments, documentation of the inventory data base&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;

The Walsh-VINCI Transit Community Partners (WVTCP) Joint Venture consisting of VINCI Construction Grands Projets and Walsh Construction has been selected to construct the $2.9BN Design Build Red Line Extension (RLE) project – the largest civil construction contract ever awarded by the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). The RLE Mainline Design-Build (MDB) Project will extend the CTA's Red Line by 5.6 miles, extending from the existing terminal at 95th/Dan Ryan south to 130th Street and Doty Avenue.
Responsabilities
As the Schedule Engineer on the $2.9BN Red Line Extension Project (RLE) in Chicago-Illinois, you will play a crucial role in planning and scheduling construction activities within a designated area, ensuring efficient use of resources to achieve milestone completion dates. This position is fully on site and in office. This position requires an understanding of construction processes, project management principles, and scheduling software/tools.
Develop and maintain detailed construction schedules for assigned projects, incorporating all phases from pre-construction to project closeout.
Collaborate with project managers, engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders to gather project requirements and constraints.
Analyze project plans, specifications, and drawings to create accurate schedules with input from stakeholders. Identify critical path and near critical path activities and potential risks; propose mitigation strategies to ensure schedule adherence.
Monitor progress against the schedule and provide regular updates to project teams and management.
Coordinate with subcontractors and suppliers to align their activities with project schedules.
Conduct schedule impact analysis for changes and deviations from the original plan.
Experience in using scheduling software (e.g., Primavera P6, Microsoft Project) proficiently to create, update, and analyze schedules.
Ensure compliance with project timelines, contractual obligations, and scheduling best practices/standards.
Perform other duties as assigned.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
Qualifications and Skills:
Required:
Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution.
Minimum five (5) years heavy construction scheduling experience
Preferred:
Major in Construction Science, Construction Management, Construction Engineering, or Civil Engineering.
Ability to summarize and consolidate information effectively both written and verbally.
Confident setting meeting agendas and leading a meeting or call.
Comfortable with programs like Word, Excel, other Microsoft Office Suite programs and information management systems such as SharePoint, Smartsheet, ACC, or E-Builder.
Organized and able to manage and store documents effectively.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Ability to interface and effectively communicate with others.
Advanced knowledge of Primavera P6.
Proven skill and ability to identify and mitigate scheduling issues for simple and complex construction projects.
Proficient with the generation and maintenance of cost and resource loaded schedules.
Ability to self-prioritize and self-start projects and task work.
Ability to effectively multi-task similar activities in a fast paced, time sensitive environment.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Advanced verbal, written and presentation communication skills.
Salary Range:
$115,000.00 to $125,000.00


Work Environment:
Required to stand, sit, walk, and/or climb stairs or ladders.
Involves a dynamic and challenging work environment.
Office-based role with regular visits to active construction sites.
Exposure to noise, weather, and typical construction conditions.
Fast-paced environment that may require long hours.
Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, and reflective vests when on-site
Physical Demands:
Must be able to lift 25lbs
Walking and standing while in-office or on-site
Occasional climbing on and off equipment and bending
