Description of the assignment
What is the project?
The Pickering Nuclear Generating Station refurbishment program involves designing and building a new deep-water intake in Lake Ontario to improve the plant's cooling system. This will involve:
- A 1.5 km-long tunnel, built by a pressurized TBM (10.15 m diameter slurry TBM);
- Two vertical shafts (onshore and offshore);
- An offshore modular intake structure, resting on the lake bed.
The project is distinguished by its proximity to an active nuclear site, requiring rigorous standards of safety, planning and coordination.
What you will do:
As an HR Generalist, you will Manage labor and union relations for a unionized workforce. Oversee HR operations, payroll processing and employee relations in compliance with labor laws and union agreements. You will also support managers, resolve workplace conflicts, and ensure effective communication across teams.
Concretely, your tasks will be:
Labor & Union Relations
- Act as the primary HR point of contact for unionized employees
- Lead the management of grievances, disciplinary actions, investigations, and dispute resolution, in accordance with collective agreements
- Support labor-management discussions and ongoing union relations
- Identify potential labor relations risks and recommend preventive actions
HR Operations, Employee Relations & Payroll
- Administer HR policies and procedures related to unionized staff
- Ensure proper implementation and adherence to the collective agreement
- Provide guidance and support to employees on HR-related matters
- Support managers in handling attendance, performance, and conduct issues
- Facilitate effective communication between management and unionized employees
- Manage and resolve workplace conflicts involving both unionized and non‑unionized employees, including complex and escalated cases
- Support change management initiatives within a unionized context
- Advise senior management during collective bargaining negotiations
- Ensure HR practices comply with labor laws, company policies, and union contracts
- Maintain accurate and confidential employee records
- Promote a positive, compliant, and respectful work environment
- Process payroll for union & non-union employees
Profile
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources or another related field
- Progress toward or completion of CHRP or CHRL designation is an asset
- 5-8 years experience in Human Resources management, with a strong focus on labor and union relations
- Proven experience working with local unions
- Previous experience construction‑related projects are preferred
- Strong knowledge of local employment laws and labor relations practices
- Experience processing payroll with ADP
- Ability to build, establish, and maintain effective working relationships with employees, managers, and union representatives
- High level of discretion, diplomacy, and professional judgment
- Excellent communication skills
