The Senior Energy Storage Engineer plays a critical role in directly supporting, coordinating, and leading on-site operations for subsurface energy storage assets. This includes oversight of field execution activities and acting as the technical authority during complex or high-risk programs.
The engineer will work closely with the VP of Energy Storage to ensure technical excellence, operational safety, regulatory compliance, and consistent delivery of high-quality engineering services.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
• Serve as the primary technical representative on site during major operations, ensuring programs for leaching, drilling, workovers, integrity testing, and cavern/reservoir commissioning are executed safely and according to approved procedures.
• Support engineering design and execution for:
o Salt cavern, mined cavern creation, leaching programs
o Cavern expansions and integrity testing
o Storage well drilling, completions, recompletions, sidetracks, and workovers
o Depleted reservoir conversion, modeling, and performance optimization
• Prepare engineering calculations, cavern development plans, leach schedules, and well program documentation.
• Contribute to geomechanical and well-integrity evaluations to ensure long-term stability of caverns and reservoirs.
• Support diagnostic planning, stimulation design, tool selection, and operational optimization.
• Provide real‑time engineering decision support, including adjusting operational parameters, validating diagnostics, and confirming compliance with the approved drilling, leaching, or workover
program.
• Supervise all critical path operations, including cavern washing cycles, MIT pressure holds and evaluations, workover rig activities, stimulation or cleanout runs, and wellbore intervention steps.
• Participate in or lead daily operational calls, pre-job safety meetings, with field supervisors and vendor crews to ensure alignment on the execution plan, HSE expectations, and risk controls.
• Oversee on‑site performance of rig contractors, leaching teams, wireline services, integrity‑test technicians, and specialized cavern‑operations vendors.
• Manage field‑level technical troubleshooting involving pressure anomalies, leach‑rate deviations, wellbore restrictions, or tool performance issues, coordinating with engineering and geomechanics teams as needed.
• Ensure strict compliance with HSE policies and all state/federal storage regulations during field execution, reinforcing stop‑work authority and verifying procedural adherence.
• Work closely with regulatory inspectors during on‑site evaluations, MIT witnessing, or facility inspections, providing technical explanations and documentation as required.
• Track KPIs related to safety, efficiency, downtime, cavern development rates, and well integrity performance, contributing to continuous‑improvement initiatives.
Bachelor’s degree in Petroleum Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Geoscience, or a related discipline.
• 10–15+ years of experience in subsurface operations, ideally including:
o Salt cavern storage engineering
o Leaching programs
o Well workovers and integrity evaluations
• Depleted reservoir storage planning and operations. Experience in key US storage sites (Mt Belvieu,
TX) preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to work across multidisciplinary teams and support complex field operations.
• Strong analytical, communication, and technical writing skills.
• Willingness to travel to field sites as required, up to 50-70% of the time.
This position is offered under a local employment contract.
